| Helicase- an enzyme that opens the double helix in replication Phosphorus 32- Isotope used to label the phage DNA in the hershey chase expiriment Chargaff-Determined that A=T and C=G in any given organism Anti parallel-Term used to describe the fact that the two strands of DNA run in opposite direction Watson and Crick- Scientists that published a brief article in nature in 1953 that described the chemical structure of DNA Rosalind Franklin- Scientist who provided the x ray diffraction pattern that was instrumental for watson and cricks model Origin of replication- location on every chromosome where replication begins 1869-year DNA was dicovered Miescher-scientist credited with the discovery of DNA Primer-"starting block" for DNA replication Taq Polymerase- Enzyme used in PCR Mullis- scientist who invented PCR Agarose- Isolated from seaweed used to make gels for DNA electrophoresis Methelye Blue- "safe stain used for staining DNA after gel electrophoresis Frameshift Mutation- when a deletion or insertion of a nucleotide creates a shift in the sequence offsetting the previous sequence Promoter- region of DNA that directs the binding of RNA Polymerase thus where the initiation of transcription occurs Somatic and Germline cells- two types of mutations according to cell type Transformation-Means of bacterial genetic variation that was discovered by griffith in 1928 Inducible- describes an operon that is usually turned "off" but can be turned "on" operator- region of DNA to which a repressor protein binds in prokaryotes stuctural genes- part of an operon that code for proteins with related functions Transcription-"DNA- directed" RNA synthesis Silent synonymous mutations- a point mutation which has no effect on the amino acid coded for Lysogenic- Term for the phage cycle in which the phage incorporates it's DNA into the host celll's genome Plasmid- extra chromosomal DNA in prokaryotes that may confer an advantage TRP - the co repressor in the trp operon Enteric Bacteria- General term for gut dwelling bacteria Reverse Transcriptase- enzyme found in retroviruses Codon- three consecutive bases on mRNA that code for an amino acid ( or a termination sequence) Anti codon- part of tRNA that corresponds to the codon, acts as an adapter from nucleotides to amino acids Temporal isolation- type of prezygotic reproductive isolating mechanism exhibited by cicadas Disruptive selection- type of natural selection that favors the extreme traits Gene flow- the movement of genes into or out of a population Pre Zygotic- reproductive isolation that occurs before fertilization Emigration- movement of individuals out of a population Sexual selection- another term for non random mating, where the species choose their mates based on their phenotypical aspects Sexual dimorphism- phenomenon in which the two genders of the same species have two different phenotypes ex. birds Biogeography- the study of geographical distribution of fossils and living things Fitness- measure of an individuals relative reproductive succes Malfus- wrote an essay arguing that organisms tend to produce many more offspring than the enviroment can support , helped darwin in his ideas of natural selection genetic drift- the shange in allele frequencies over time as a result of random chance Lamarck- proposed the notion of inheritance of aquired traits as a mechanism for evolution
remeber these are not all of the definitons for the three chapter just the one's he used on the test in the fill in the blank sections. | |
